Expert calls for new fatwa on brain dead

In the light of new studies, he said a fresh dialogue needs to be initiated with the ulema. “We respect our ulema. They deserve all our respect. They are intelligent people. They just need to be told about the new research. Once they are convinced they will automatically revise their ruling and will allow a person in a coma but with a beating heart to continue living and to let him continue communicating with his heart. A person's spirit is in the heart and as long as it is beating the communication is on and should not be physically terminated. We should not interfere in the ways of God. He has given life and only He will take it away.” READ MORE

For deaf, wireless devices a new portal to world

uietly over the last decade, phones that make text messaging easy have changed life profoundly for millions of deaf people.Gone are the days of a deaf person driving to someone’s house just to see if they are home. Wives text their deaf husbands in the basement, just as a hearing wife might yell down the stairs. Deaf teens blend in with the mall crowd since they’re constantly texting, like everyone else in high school.Visit the Alabama School for the Deaf, and it’s impossible to miss the signs of a revolution that many hearing people simply never noticed. Most everyone at the school in Talladega has at least one handheld texting device, and some have two. At lunch, deaf diners order burgers and fries by text: Punch in the order and show it at the counter. READ MORE

Wikipedia co-founder: WikiLeaks was irresponsible

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales said Tuesday that whistle-blower website WikiLeaks' decision to publish entire contents of classified US military documents was irresponsible and could put innocent lives at risk. WikiLeaks drew worldwide publicity in late July when it posted a huge trove of secret US military documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US Defense Department has warned it could have blood on its hands for publishing documents that name Afghan sources. READ MORE

Iraq: One of history's greatest crimes

America's hidden history is ugly and disturbing. No nation ever matched it. To Iraq alone, over the past two decades, it includes ongoing genocide, destruction, terror, occupation, and contamination — a horrendous combination of crimes, unmentioned in Western discourse. Environmental Engineering professor Souad N. Al-Azzawi documents them, including in her report titled, "Crime of the Century: Iraq's Occupation and DU Contamination," a detailed account of US culpability. READ MORE

Ozone layer 'is no longer disappearing and will return to full strength by 2048', says UN report

The ozone layer is no longer disappearing and could be back to full strength by the middle of this century, UN scientists have confirmed. The phasing out of nearly 100 substances once used in products like refrigerators and aerosols has stopped the ozone layer being depleted further, although it is not yet increasing, according to a new United Nations report released last week. And it claimed that international efforts to protect the ozone layer has averted millions of cases of skin cancer worldwide. READ MORE

Russia to Build Orbiting Hotel for Space Tourists

Image
A Russian company on Wednesday announced an ambitious bid to fill the vacuum in the space tourism market by stationing an orbiting hotel in the cosmos. The Moscow-based Orbital Technologies has sky-high hopes that its planned Commercial Space Station can serve as a tourism hub for well-heeled travelers and offer overspill accommodation for the International Space Station and workspace for science projects. But it's unlikely to come anytime soon -- the company wants to launch a seven-room station by 2016 but may increase or decrease that capacity based on customer demand. READ MORE

FBI agents cheated on exam using answer sheets - report

FBI agents cheated on an internal exam by conferring, using crib sheets, and finding answers on computers, a Department of Justice probe has found. Staff were required to take a test on their knowledge of new unified guidelines on domestic investigations. Suspicions were raised when many passed the 90-minute exam in just 20 minutes. The authors of the report said "a significant number of FBI employees engaged in some form of improper conduct or cheating". After the controversial guidelines were introduced, staff were required to take 16.5 hours of classroom tuition and then take a 51-question computerised exam that was expected to take most people between 90 minutes and two hours. 10 useless matters

By Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah 1. Knowledge that is not acted on. 2. The deed that has neither sincerity nor is based on following the righteous examples of others. 3. Money that is hoarded, as the owner neither enjoys it during this life nor obtains any reward for it in the Hereafter. 4. The heart that is empty of love and longing for Allah, and of seeking closeness to Him. 5. A body that does not obey and serve Allah. 6. Loving Allah without following His orders or seeking His pleasure. 7. Time that is not spent in expiating sins or seizing opportunities to do good. 8. A mind that thinks about useless matters. 9. Serving those who do not bring you close to Allah, nor benefit you in your life. 10. Hoping and fearing whoever is under the authority of Allah and in His Hand; while he cannot bring any benefit or harm to himself, nor death, nor life; nor can he resurrect himself. However, the greater of these matters are wasting the heart and wasting time. Wasting the heart is done by preferri...

Mosques to become bigger part of German life – Chancellor Angela Merkel

Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germans had for too long failed to grasp how immigration was changing their country and would have to get used to the sight of more mosques in their cities. Germany, home to at least 4 million Muslims, has been divided in recent weeks by a debate over integration sparked by disparaging remarks about Muslim immigrants by an outspoken member of the country’s central bank. “Our country is going to carry on changing, and integration is also a task for the society taking up the immigrants,” Merkel told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Saturday. “For years we’ve been deceiving ourselves about this. Mosques, for example, are going to be a more prominent part of our cities than they were before,” she added. READ MORE

Sex abuse victim learns of Pope's role

Matt McCormick was in the seventh grade when Father Alvin Campbell gave him a ride home from a baseball game. As they were driving along country roads, Campbell put his hand on McCormick’s thigh and “just left it there.” It was the first time the priest had touched him. During the next three years, McCormick says, the abuse would go much further. That was 25 years ago. Just three months ago, he learned that Pope Benedict XVI played a role in keeping his abuser in the church when CNN told him about a letter signed by the pontiff – then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger – refusing to defrock the pedophile priest. Walking around the 1,000-person Illinois farming town where he grew up, McCormick pointed out where he was molested: inside the church school, inside the rectory, and inside the church itself. Before performing his duties as an altar server, McCormick and other boys were fondled by Campbell in a room just steps away from the altar. “He thought it would be funny if we went out with erect...

Homestretch: Part Two in the Dr. Aafia Siddiqui story

By Rahla Khan The 86-year imprisonment sentence pronounced against Dr. Aafia Siddiqui by Judge Richard Berman in a Manhattan federal court on September 23, is by no means the end of her heartrending saga.International human rights activists, supporters across the world and her family hope that in time, it will be recorded as just another blip on the road to achieving justice, and ultimately, freedom from the clutches of an establishment that has systematically tortured, abused, falsely implicated, vilified and dehumanized the beleaguered neuroscientist and mother of three.Hundreds of protesters spontaneously marching towards the US Embassy in Karachi and other places in Pakistan are not the only people outraged by the sentence. Statements decrying the ?miscarriage of justice' poured in from international human rights organizations, politicians, journalists, lawyers and ordinary people around the world, within hours of the sentencing. Aiming high - pilot realises da Vinci flight dream

Image
A Canadian student inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's sketches says he has made the first sustained flight in a human-powered, wing-flapping aircraft. Todd Reichert's ornithopter is an engineless plane that stays aloft by flapping its wings like a bird. The craft, dubbed "Snowbird", flew 145m (476 feet) at the Great Lakes Gliding Club in Tottenham, Ontario. The Federation Aeronautique Internationale is expected to confirm the record at its meeting in October. READ MORE

Dog Gets Award For Saving Sex Attack Victim

Jake, a former rescue dog, was on a walk in a park with his owner when a woman's screams were heard in the distance. The fearless hound darted off into a woodland area and found Esmahil Adhami, 18, molesting a woman, aged in her 20s. Jake lunged at Adhami and chased him away - and stayed with the distraught victim, circling her "like he was guarding", until the police arrived. His owner, Liz Maxter-Bluck, said Jake had been "incredible" during the incident that took place on Hershall Common, Coventry, last July. READ MORE

Archbishop of Canterbury: Anglican Church has 'no problem' with gay bishops

While recognising that he was simplifying the Church's position, Dr Williams said in an interview: "There's no problem about a gay person who's a bishop. It's about the fact that there are traditionally, historically, standards that the clergy are expected to observe." Asked what was wrong with a homosexual bishop having a partner, he said: "I think because the scriptural and traditional approach to this doesn't give much ground for being positive about it." He said the issue remained a particularly divisive one: "The Church at the moment doesn't quite know what to make of it." He told The Times Magazine that even discussing the difficult topic could lead to the persecution of homosexuals in countries like Uganda, by fuelling intolerance. He also stressed his role for religious unity, saying: "We actually need each other, however much we dislike each other." READ MORE

Deaf victim of sex abuse is suing pope, and going public with his story for the first time

Terry Kohut has kept a dark secret for nearly 50 years. Now he is breaking his silence, becoming a key figure in the sex-abuse crisis in the Catholic Church and the growing controversy over what Pope Benedict XVI did about it. When Kohut was barely a teen, and for years afterward, he says, he was sexually molested and assaulted by the headmaster and priest of the school where he lived, St. John’s School for the Deaf, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What occurred there is one of the most notorious cases of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Kohut was not alone. From 1950 to 1974 the headmaster of St. Johns, Father Lawrence C. Murphy, raped and molested as many as 200 deaf boys, according to court and church documents. Kohut has now filed the first sex-abuse lawsuit against the Vatican actually naming Pope Benedict, previously known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as a defendant. READ MORE

No matter what, we’re still believers

Yahya Bin Mu’adh was once asked, “When does a slave of Allah reach the ranks of Ridha (being pleased with Allah)?” He said: “When he acts upon four principles with which he deals with his Lord: That he says: ‘(O Allah), if You give me, I shall accept and if You prevent me, then I shall be content. If You were to leave me, I shall still worship You, and were You to call me I shall indeed answer.” (Hilyat Al-Awliya) READ MORE

What made Prophet’s Companions exceptional?

The Companions of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) did not treat Islamic knowledge as if it were a series of facts that are pertinent exclusively to the sphere of the mind but have nothing to do with the heart or with actions. As a result of acquiring knowledge about Allah, His Names, His attributes, and His actions, the Prophet’s Companions loved Allah; worshipped Him; longed not only to meet Him, but also to enjoy looking at His Noble Countenance; glorified Him; feared Him; strove hard to avoid doing those things that would bring upon them His wrath and punishment; hoped for reward from Him – for Paradise and His Good Pleasure; and cherished good thoughts about Him. Hence they embodied the positive effects of having knowledge of and faith in Allah: love, fear, and hope. READ MORE

Leader of 'Cult-Like' Religious Sect Hospitalized

The leader of a breakaway religious sect was hospitalized Sunday for a mental evaluation after she and members of her group went missing and left behind evidence that they were awaiting the Rapture or some catastrophic event. Reyna Marisol Chicas was placed under a 72-hour mandatory hold after it was determined she was not able to care for herself or others, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Kim. Chicas gave investigators a false name and gave rambling answers during questioning, Kim said. She told deputies she had no children, even though her two children were with her. Ending a frantic search, deputies found Chicas and 12 others just before noon at Jackie Robinson Park near Palmdale after getting a tip from a local resident, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. He said all members are safe. Officers had been searching a wide swath of Southern California since Saturday after family members found letters saying the group was awaiting an apocalyptic event and w...

Anti-abortion activists arrested over graphic banner

Anti-abortion activists are preparing to launch a landmark freedom of expression test case after they were arrested and held in police cells for 15 hours for refusing to take down placards showing graphic images of an aborted foetus. Andy Stephenson, 35, and Kathryn Sloane, 19, both committed Christians, were detained after a peaceful protest outside a publicly-funded abortion clinic. The Crown Prosecution Service will decide next month whether to press charges against the pair for causing 'harassment, alarm or distress' under the Public Order Act. Mr Stephenson and Miss Sloane are both members of Abort '67, an organisation which uses shocking images to try to deter women from going through with terminations. They believe the use of graphic imagery is critical in trying to shape public opinion and to reduce the 200,000 abortions taking place in the UK every year. The images, obtained in America are, according to the group, perfectly lawful there and in most other countries ...

Mass Suicide Fears Over Missing LA Sect

A religious sect of 13 people - including several children - have gone missing amid fears they plan a mass suicide. Authorities in southern California said they were searching a desert outside Los Angeles for the group. The sect includes three sisters, aged 30, 32 and 40 years, a 19-year-old man and eight children, aged eight to 17. It is headed by "cult-like leader" Reyna Marisol Chicas, according to officials. Police were alerted after two husbands reported on Saturday that their wives had gone missing after attending a prayer meeting. According to the Los Angeles Times, a California Highway Patrol "alert" said: "It is believed, through further investigation, that (their) intentions are to commit mass suicide. "The letters essentially state that they are all going to heaven shortly to meet Jesus and their deceased relatives. "Numerous letters found say goodbye to their (living) relatives." But LA County Sheriff's Captain Mike Parker said th...

9,000 protesters gather for London demonstration against Papal tour

Organisers estimated up to 10,000 were due to join the march to Downing Street in opposition to the papal tour, but shortly before the march police put the growing crowd at between 7,000 and 9,000. Campaigners held aloft banners stating ''the Pope is wrong – put a condom on'' and ''Pope protects paedophile priests'' as they joined the march. The action is supported by the British Humanist Association and the National Secular Society among others. Protesters cite a number of grievances against the Vatican's stance on issues ranging from gay rights, the use of condoms and the Church's response to clerical sex abuse. As they waited to set off, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell accused the Pontiff of obstructing police investigations into paedophile priests. He said: "The Pope's apologies do not ring true. Even today he is refusing to hand over Vatican files he holds under lock and key. Priests who sexually abused children should. Be br...

Richard Dawkins calls for arrest of Pope Benedict XVI

RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”. Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church. The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998. The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases. Benedict will be in Britain between September 16 and 19, visiting London, Glasgow and Coventry, where he will beatify Cardin...

Does the Niqab have a basis in Shariah?

Image
Media around the globe reported Thursday that a leading Al-Azhar “scholar” has said Niqab “has no basis in Shariah and there is nothing in the Qur’an and Sunnah that supports it”. While it is true that there is a difference of opinion among the various schools of Islamic jurisprudence on the obligation of wearing a face-veil – with some considering it Wajib (obligatory) and others Mustahabb (recommended) – there have never been any questions raised on the validity of wearing a face-veil. There are numerous Ahadith that conclusively prove that the entire community of Muslim women covered their faces with an external garment as they went about their business – not just the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him). n Narrated Ayesha (part of a much longer narration): “...When he reached my place in the morning, he saw the figure of a sleeping person and he recognized me on seeing me, as he had seen me before the order of compulsory veiling (was prescribed). So I woke up when he recited Is...

The Niqab Ban - Unveiling the Facade

The recent ban on the niqab in the French parliament and the attempt of Conservative MP Philip Hollobone to initiate a ban in the UK, coupled with the subsequent media furore, has exposed some glaring contradictions. If politicians, the media and social commentators care for women and believe that their world view facilitates the emancipation of women, then why have they focused on a cloth that covers her body rather than focus on the contemporary facade effecting women in the west. In Britain, for example, Domestic Violence •1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence. •Two women are murdered every week by a current or a former partner. •In any one year, there are 13 million separate incidents of physical violence or threats of violence against women from partners or former partners. •1 in 5 young men and 1 in 10 young women think that abuse or violence against women is acceptable. Empowerment and Self-esteem •66 % of women in the UK would consider plastic surgery because of co...

UK bans pregnant nun ice cream ad

Britain's advertising watchdog has censured an Italian ice cream manufacturer over an advertisement depicting a heavily pregnant nun that appeared ahead of a papal visit to the UK. The ad featuring the strapline "immaculately conceived" over an image of the expectant sister spooning from a tub of Antonio Federici ice cream was "likely to cause widespread offense," the Advertising Standards Authority ruled. The ASA said the publishers of Lady magazine, which carried the ad, had received several complaints from readers. The watchdog rejected the manufacturer's claims that it was "using gentle humor" to convey the message that "ice cream is our religion." "We considered the use of a nun pregnant through immaculate conception was likely to be seen as a distortion and mockery of the beliefs of Roman Catholics," the ASA ruling said. "We concluded that to use such an image in a light hearted way to advertise ice cream was likely t...

"It is a law that is unlawful,"

"It is a law that is unlawful," said Drider, a mother of four from Avignon, in southern France. "It is ... against individual liberty, freedom of religion, liberty of conscience," she said. "I will continue to live my life as I always have with my full veil," she told Associated Press Television News. Drider was the only woman who wears a full-faced veil to be interviewed by a parliamentary panel that spent six months deciding whether to move ahead with legislation. Muslim leaders concur that Islam does not require a woman to hide her face. However, they have voiced concerns that a law forbidding them to do so would stigmatize the French Muslim population, which at an estimated 5 million is the largest in western Europe. Numerous Muslim women who wear the face-covering veil have said they are being increasingly harassed in the streets. READ MORE

Belgium church abuse detailed by Adriaenssens report

Harrowing details of some 300 cases of alleged sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy in Belgium have been released by a Church investigator. Peter Adriaenssens said cases of abuse, mostly involving minors, had been found in nearly every diocese, and 13 alleged victims had committed suicide. Two-thirds of victims were boys but 100 girls also suffered, he said. Belgian media have accused the Church of seeking to hide abuse despite prosecutions of abusers. While the commission he headed had found no indication that the Church had systematically sought to cover up cases, Mr Adriaenssens said its findings were a "body blow" to the Church in Belgium. The child psychiatrist, who has worked with trauma victims for 23 years, said nothing had prepared him for the stories of abuse, which multiplied as former abusers gave testimony. "We saw how priests, called up by the commission and asked to help seek the truth, were willing to set up the list of 10, 15, 20 victims they abused dur...

US Koran burning event 'on hold'

US Koran burning event on hold, says pastor Terry Jones The US pastor who threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday says his plans are not cancelled but "on hold". A spokesman for pastor Terry Jones said he felt he had been lied to by an imam who had got him to drop the plan. Mr Jones initially told reporters imam Muhammad Musri had agreed to move an Islamic centre planned near New York's Ground Zero. But Mr Musri later said no such deal had been reached. BBC US President Barack Obama had exhorted Jones to “listen to those better angels” and call off his plan. Obama had told ABC’s “Good Morning America” in an interview aired on Thursday that he hoped pastor Jones would listen to the pleas of people who had asked him to call off the plan. The president called it a ‘stunt.’ “If he’s listening, I hope he understands that what he’s proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans,” Obama said. “That this country has been bu...
