Eight million gallons of water drained from reservoir after man urinates in it

The operation is costing the state's taxpayers $36,000 (£22,000) and was ordered after Joshua Seater, 21, was caught on a security camera relieving himself in the pristine lake. Health experts said the incident would not have caused any harm to people in the city of Portland, who are supplied with drinking water from the reservoir. They said the average human bladder holds only six to eight ounces, and the urine would have been vastly diluted. But David Shaff, an administrator at the Portland Water Bureau, defended the decision to empty the lake. "There are people who will say it's an over reaction. I don't think so. I think what you have to deal with here is the 'yuck' factor," he said. "I can imagine how many people would be saying 'I made orange juice with that water this morning.' "Do you want to drink pee? Most people are going to be pretty damn squeamish about that." ReadMore

Jewish court sentences dog to death by stoning

According to Ynet, the large dog made its way into the Monetary Affairs Court in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, frightening judges and plaintiffs. Despite attempts to drive the dog out of the court, the hound refused to leave the premises. One of the sitting judges then recalled a curse the court had passed down upon a secular lawyer who had insulted the judges two decades previously. Their preferred divine retribution was for the lawyer's spirit to move into the body of a dog, an animal considered impure by traditional Judaism. Clearly still offended, one of the judges sentenced the animal to death by stoning by local children. ReadMore

Nurses warned over 'cleavage at work'

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has issued a strict new uniform policy for all staff after a series of complaints from patients. Doctors and nurses face the threat of disciplinary action if they are caught wearing clothes which expose their ''midriff'' or ''excessive cleavage''. The guidelines also ban the Trust's 5,000 clinical and non-uniform staff from wearing shorts, mini-skirts, denim or leggings while at work. The six-page uniform policy was agreed in March and aims to establish a ''professional and consistent '' image which reflects the ''Trust's values''. It reads: ''Staff will not dress in ways that undermines the spirit of this policy and clothing that exposes the midriff, torso or excessive cleavage, along with wearing denim, shorts, leggings and mini-skirts, are not acceptable.'' Hannah Middleton, Unison branch secretary for the Trust, sai

School Surveys 7th-Graders on Oral Sex

A middle school in Massachusetts is under fire for requiring children to complete a graphic sex survey -- without parental knowledge or consent -- that included questions about sexual partners and oral sex. The Rutherford Institute, a civil liberties organization, filed a complaint with the U.S. Dept. of Education against the Fitchburg School Committee. They are representing the two middle school-aged daughters of Arlene Tessitore. Tessitore said her daughters, both students at Memorial Middle School, were told they had to complete a Youth Risk Behavior Study. “Kids were actually told to sit down and take them,” said John Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. “The parents here are very upset.” Whitehead said the girls were deeply disturbed by the subject matter of the study – including questions about suicide, drug use and sexual behavior. “One of the questions is, ‘have you ever had oral sex,’” Whitehead said. “You’re talking about kids who probably do

‘India’s Picasso’ Husain passes away in London

Maqbool Fida Husain, India’s best known painter, died in London on Thursday aged 95, a close friend of the artist told Reuters, five years after he left his homeland after being persecuted by Hindu fanatics angry at his work. “He died of old age. It happened early this morning,” said Munna Zaveri, who had befriended Husain for 40 years, before leaving for London. “He was in hospital for some time and was supposed to come home today or tomorrow but his condition worsened.” Dubbed the “Picasso of India,” Husain’s work was a blend of cubism and classical Indian styles that helped put modern Indian art on the global arena. His canvasses sold for millions of dollars. His depictions of naked Hindu deities enraged Hindus who attacked his house, vandalized shows displaying his work and drove him to flee India. For years, galleries were too frightened of protests to display his work. In 2006, he moved from Mumbai to Dubai, later London, and in 2010 accepted Qatari ci

Website helps Saudi girl in journey of faith

An 18-year-old Saudi girl, who was staying with her Christian mother in the United States, has embraced Islam while she was in the Kingdom on vacation, said Majed Al-Osaimi, director of www.edialogue.org dawa website. Speaking to Arab News, he said the teenager, who is studying in the US, accepted Islam as her new religion after chatting with a woman dawa worker (propagator) associated with the website, whose name is Rukn Al-Huwar in Arabic. “The girl had obtained some knowledge about Islam and cleared all her doubts during the 20-minute conversation with our dawa worker and declared her Shahada,” Al-Osaimi said. He said his website, which was established in March this year, was instrumental in taking 119 people of different nationalities to the light of Islam. “Every day one or two individuals are accepting Islam as their religion through our website,” he pointed out. Al-Osaimi urged Saudis and other Muslims living in the West to teach their children about

Solar flare threatens to disrupt Earth's communications and power

The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. "This one was rather dramatic," said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the NWS's Space Weather Prediction Center, describing the M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare that peaked at 1:41am Eastern time in the United States, or 0541 GMT. "We saw the initial flare occurring and it wasn't that big but then the eruption associated with it – we got energy particle radiation flowing in and we got a big coronal mass injection," he said. "You can see all the materials blasting up from the Sun so it is quite fantastic to look at." Nasa's solar dynamics observatory, which launched last year and provided the high-definition pictures and video of the event, described it as "visually spectacular,

Man beats 2-year-old girl to toughen her up

A Pennsylvania man faces attempted homicide charges for allegedly beating his fiancee’s 2-year-old daughter because he thought the girl’s upbringing had been too lenient. Investigators say 24-year-old Brandon Bishop told officers the girl was a princess. The Morning Call of Allentown reports Bishop admitted punching, kicking and choking the girl and picking her up by her hair and dropping her. ReadMore
