Former Miss USA Says She Was 'Molested' by TSA at Airport

Image
A former beauty queen is talking about her traumatic experience at the Dallas airport security line. Suzie Castillo, crowned Miss USA in 2003, posted a video on YouTube immediately after a TSA pat-down, saying the airport screener “molested” her, MyFoxDFW.com reports. Castillo says a TSA officer brushed against her private parts not once, but four times after she opted out of a full body scan. “Hey guys, so I am here at the Dallas airport and I’m very emotional right now because I just went through security,” she said in the video. Castillo says she has filed a complaint with the TSA and has started a petition on her blog to end intrusive searches.

Mom Files Complaint Against School Over Sex-Ed Book

Image
A Washington state mother has filed a complaint against her daughter's school district after she brought home a sexual education book. Jennifer Swedeoson says she was caught off guard when her 10-year-old daughter, Kaleigh, brought the book home from school. "I start flipping through -- this is all right -- but then it starts talking more about sex, and I get into it and it's completely too graphic for her," she told Q13Fox.com. The book, "What's the Big Secret," which is allowed at the Oak Harbor School District, shows how boys and girls differ and talks about "different types of touching." "This is one of the first that definitely caught my eye, talking about masturbation when you are 10 years old. What do you need to read that for? I'm not so upset about the book itself. I think they should be sending home permission slips, making sure parents are aware that the book is there," she told the website. The scho...

Breakup in marriage? Blame it on social networking sites

Image
Facebook sometimes also contributes to the dissolutions of marriages. Occasionally, husbands use the website for adventures: to make friendships with members of the opposite gender. This doesn’t always remain unnoticed by their wives, who then start spying on them. They refuse to let their husbands add any female friends to their friends’ list. Some wives discover that their husbands are having a good time making friendships with other women and lie about their social status. This leads to extreme situations, in which they ban their husbands from Facebook. Others make fake accounts and add their husband, so that they can catch them red-handed. “A wife that allows her husband to have a Facebook account is crazy,” said Fatima Shaker, a housewife. Fatima suffered a lot because of her husband’s adventures with other women on Facebook. She said that she wished to delete his account. He promised her when he first joined the social network to use it the right way,...

A new translation of the holy Qur’an by Indian-American space scientist Dr. Nazeer Ahmed, titled The Qur’an: An English Translation was released here on April 28 in the Bangalore Press Club. Printed in Bangalore, the translation has been published by The American Institute of Islamic History and Culture, California. Introducing his work, Dr. Nazeer told the media-persons, the translation is in simple American English and is primarily meant to introduce its message to the Americans whose minds had been abused by the misleading propaganda by vested interests linking Islam to terrorism. The first copy was released by Maulana Riyazur Rahman Rashadi, Imam at the Jama Masjid in Bangalore city. He presented the first copy to A. Jayaram, a veteran journalist, and formerly resident editor of The Hindu. Speaking on the occasion, Jayaram said Islam was a religion of peace and its image has been greatly maligned in the recent days in the wake of 9/11 attack on the WTC. He said people confuse sever...

Sip Coffee, Not Guilt: myths debunked

Image
Contrary to popular belief, coffee is not detrimental to health. Truth of the fact is, drinking coffee in moderation (3-4 cups per day) provides 60 percent of the body’s daily intake of antioxidants, that help prevent cell damage and contribute to overall health and well-being. Caffeine has been proven to reduce mental fatigue and increase concentration as well helping fight jet lag and stimulating the muscles for better physical performance. There is also an emerging body of research which suggests a link between coffee and the prevention of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, strokes and certain types of cancers. READMORE

Most Egyptians want Qur’an as source of laws

Image
A majority of Egyptians believe laws in their country should observe the teachings of Islam’s holy book, the Qur’an, according to the results of an opinion poll by a US-based research center. The results also show that Egyptians, who have shifted toward religious conservatism over the past 40 or so years, are open to the inclusion of religious parties in future governments. Only a minority, however, sympathize with fundamentalist religious parties, according to the results. Overall, the results of the poll paint a picture of Egyptians as a people who prefer religious moderation over extremism and prize democratic values even if they come at the risk of some political instability. The poll results were released late Monday and come five months ahead of legislative elections, the first since the February ouster of longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak. Islamic parties are expected to make a significant showing in the crucial vote, with 50 percent of peo...

The project will be completed in 15 years and in several phases. CERN physics lab downplays claim of key discovery

The world’s biggest particle physics lab on Tuesday played down claims of a major discovery, after a leaked memo hinting that the elusive Higgs boson may have been found ricocheted around science websites. A spokesman for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said the memo wasn’t intended for publication and the claims likely wouldn’t withstand closer scrutiny. If proven to exist, the Higgs particle could explain why matter has mass, an enormous scientific breakthrough. “The note is certainly genuine,” spokesman James Gillies told The Associated Press on Tuesday. But he said such memos are merely the very first step in a rigorous peer-review process that tends to result in spectacular claims being knocked down by other scientists. “I think the excitement is due mainly to the incredible sense of anticipation there is in particle physics at the moment,” said Gillies. Thousands of researchers around the world are poring over data generated at CERN’s $10-billion Large Hadro...

Indian spiritual guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba, respected by millions of followers, died on Sunday in a hospital in southern India. He was 86. Sai Baba, who was admitted to hospital in his hometown of Puttaparti a month ago, died of multiple organ failure, media said. His followers, estimated to number six million, included top Indian politicians, business tycoons and Bollywood stars. Sai Baba, with distinctive frizzy hair and always clad in his trademark saffron robes, ran schools and hospitals through trusts in numerous countries. He survived a stroke and a series of heart attacks in 1963. In 2005, he began using a wheelchair, and a year later he fractured his hip when a student fell from a stool onto him. Sai Baba was also mired in controversies, with several news reports about allegations of sexual abuse and fake miracles. A 2004 BBC television program called the “Secret Swami” featured interviews with at least two American male devotees who claimed the guru ha...

Expelled by college, lesbian girl says action should be reviewed

A Saudi woman expelled from her college for having a lesbian relationship with her hostel supervisor has urged authorities to review the decision and allow her to continue her education. Speaking on a radio program recently, the girl who introduced herself as Sarah from Turaif who was in the final year of her course, said it was the hostel supervisor who started the relationship. “Unfortunately, the investigating committee did not take any action against the supervisor, who sent more than 1,000 love texts to my mobile in addition to written letters,” she told the program. WikiLeaks: Guantanamo Bay terrorist secrets revealed

Only about 220 of the people detained are assessed by the Americans to be dangerous international terrorists. A further 380 people are lower-level foot-soldiers, either members of the Taliban or extremists who travelled to Afghanistan whose presence at the military facility is questionable. At least a further 150 people are innocent Afghans or Pakistanis, including farmers, chefs and drivers who were rounded up or even sold to US forces and transferred across the world. In the top-secret documents, senior US commanders conclude that in dozens of cases there is “no reason recorded for transfer”. ReadMore

‘Use modern media to propagate Islam’

Muhammad Badahdah, assistant secretary-general of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), has emphasized the need to make use of modern information media, including the highly popular social media, to propagate the message of Islam. Opening a media workshop organized by Chennamangallur Islahiya Association, Jeddah chapter, Badahdah said Muslims should obtain more training in media activities in order to become masters in the field and give the mass media a proper direction. “The media has become a major changing force in the world. Nobody can ignore its power and influence. We have to make use of modern media to spread the true message of Islam and remove the misunderstandings about this great religion,” ReadMore

Technology can’t replace God

Under a splendid sun, the pope presided at a colorful celebration where tens of thousands of people waved palm and olive branches to commemorate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem the week before he was crucified. The pope, who turned 84 on Saturday, wove his sermon around the theme of man’s relationship with God and how it can sometimes be threatened by technology. “From the beginning men and women have been filled — and this is as true today as ever — with a desire to ‘be like God,’ to attain the heights of God by their own powers,” he said. readmore

London pub kicks out kissing Gay couple

Image
Two young gay men say their first-date kiss got them thrown out of a London pub — and turned them into Internet icons. Jonathan Williams says he and his date, James Bull, were asked to leave after sharing what they described as a “hands-on-the-table” kiss at the John Snow pub in London’s Soho, normally known as one of London’s gay-friendliest neighborhoods. Anger snowballed after Williams tweeted about the incident late Wednesday, and within 24 hours, the story was on the front page of Britain’s Guardian newspaper and the pair were describing their ordeal on national radio. The pub declined comment Friday, but its management could be seeing quite a crowd later in the evening. Hundreds have signed up to a Facebook group promising a three-hour kiss-in at the Snow, and the Guardian has — half-jokingly — offered rolling coverage of the controversy. The kiss-in’s organizer, 50-year-old Paul Shetler, said he first heard about the incident on Twitter. “I found it ...

Aviation controllers need naps on the job: Scientists

The best solution to the problem of sleepy air traffic controllers (ATCs) is more sleeping on the job, scientists say. But that would be a radical change for the Federal Aviation Administration. Current regulations forbid sleeping at work, even during breaks. Controllers who are caught can be suspended or fired. Experts say that kind of thinking is outdated. “There should be sanctioned on-shift napping. That’s the way to handle night shift work,” said Gregory Belenky, a sleep expert at Washington State University in Spokane. There are plenty of other scientists in the US and around the world who agree with him. Sleep studies show that nighttime workers who are allowed “recuperative breaks” are more alert when they return to their tasks. A working group on controller fatigue made up of officials from the FAA and the union that represents air traffic controllers recently embraced that position as well. The issue has taken on a new urgency in the wake of four recent episodes in which the ...

Former Miss Russia accused of stealing drugs

A former Miss Russia faced drug charges in the United States for a second time on Tuesday, allegedly using stolen prescription pads to obtain painkillers and other drugs from pharmacies in New York. Anna Malova pleaded not guilty in state Supreme Court in Manhattan to 44 charges of petty larceny, forgery and criminal possession of controlled substances. The indictment compiled by the city's Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor includes 11 instances in which Malova allegedly forged prescriptions to obtain the painkiller Vicodin and the anti-anxiety drug clonazepam, which is marketed as Klonopin, using pads she stole from two psychiatrists she had been seeing. The former beauty queen had been arrested in 2010 on similar charges in a case brought by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. That case is still pending. The Office of Special Narcotics Prosecutor began investigating Malova after one of the psychiatrists reported the theft of her pad. Malova was crowned Miss Rus...

Dealing With Homosexual Urges...

Image
Q: Shaykh, I have unnatural urges and feel attracted to members of the same gender. I don’t know what to do about this, can you please give me some advice. A: Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wa-l-salaat wa-l-salaam ala Rasulillah I was actually asked the same question in Toronto, a few weeks ago. And while this is a very disturbing question to some people, it is something that needs to be mentioned and discussed publicly. It is possible that some people have urges that are considered abnormal by others. Sometimes, from a religious perspective these urges would indeed be classified as abnormal. But simply having such urges does not justify acting upon them. The issue of sexual orientation has raised a huge controversy in Western circles. People are still debating whether sexual orientation is decreed by what they call ‘Nature’, or by ‘nurture’. And the reason for this debate is that there is a tendency to justify homosexual urges because, it is claimed, they are beyond one’s control. So, some...

German Ministry of Education: Imams Should Teach Islam at Public Schools

Image
The German Minister of Education Annette Schavan wants imams teach courses in Islamic religions in schools, provided those imams are trained at a German university. In Germany, where church and state are not separate, the schools provide religious instruction, Catholic or Protestant to students. They could be "used in schools" at halftime, as "priests," said Schavan to Die Zeit. She nevertheless conditioned their hiring that they are trained at university in Germany. Four new institutes devoted to Islamic theology are being created in the universities of Tübingen (southwest), Erlangen (south), Osnabrück / Münster (west) and Frankfurt (center), with support from the Department of research. Between 3.8 and 4.3 million Muslims (45% have German nationality) currently living in Germany with 82 million inhabitants. The Turks form the largest community with 2.5 million people. Like most European countries, Germany, with one third of Catholics, Protestants and all the rest ...
